Thrifting Adventures

Post by pyral »

A lot of folks like old things, so here's an adventure I had today looking for furniture. I moved a couch (that I want to destroy eventually because I hate it) but it means I have a wall in my room that's just not getting used. I have to make the most of this space and currently I have stuff lying around since I don't have enough things and stuff to put game objects on top of.

So there's an antique monolith a bit aways. It's very large and has a lot of stuff. I was going to take pictures with my camcorder, but I forgot it in the car, so I had to use my flip phone camera (unironically)

There were a few fun things in here to see. First, I saw one of those Wowwee raptors. Don't think I'd seen one in person. sadly the final segment of the tail was missing, he apparently didn't turn on (giggity), and there was no controller. In fairness he'd have been a neat decoration, but for 35$ I think I could've gotten a working one probably. Good for recording or promo ads maybe.

Near the videogames, which was one very small section, I saw a few Pokemon. Apparently Pokemon is antiques. There was some VHSes, but this was probably the funniest. Some Mewtwo plus I'd never seen. It almost looks bootleg. What even is this? Again, flip phone camera. The lighting was good, but the photo was not. We really are living in 1986 here.
I was not born a Pokemon, I was created.

I got lost and ended up in the T-shirt section. There wasn't much interesting over there. This shirt was a jumpscare though. Let's not talk about this one.
It says "Garfinaika". Thanks Argil!

Sadly, the difference between an antique store and a random estate sale or Good Will is they actually look up the prices of videogames. Though it's hard to see, you see DMG games like Zelda and Final Fantasy Legends for 45-55$.

In the vidya area, I saw a vertically held HDMI VHS + DVD player. I didn't know this kind of thing even existed until hearing Byvsen had one, and less so knew they existed in the US. Honestly I was damn near tempted to get one, but the 125$ price tag repelled me when I was supposed to be looking for things to put stuff on.

As I delved through the very small cell, there was some fun stuff. Another thing I was tempted to get was Final Fantasy 8. Crash Bandicoot 2 black label was behind it, which was way overpriced. Crash 2 was my first game and I had the lenticular black label. FF8 was about 30$ which I'd seen online. Tempting since PS1 can't boot from hard drive, but alas, I don't intend to play FF8 again anytime soon.

We then went to leave this mall. But something odd caught my eye. These seem to be gilded fake-yen? Million dollar bills? I saw these two Pokemon ones. Snapped them since never seen them before, but whatever. Some dumb superhero crap was there too in similar form factor, but literally who cares.

We went to a few other places. Some game sections were boring, furniture was overpriced, but a big highlight was running into wild copies of Wizardology and uh, Creatureology? Mythology? The mythos creature version of that series. I didn't skim it much, but I saw the dragon. Cool. I only had Dragonology as a thirteen year old. Did look around in case that was here, but I didn't see it. Would've gotten it if I saw it probably.

The last thing I saw was in the games section of that place, where I saw some Crash memory game from Crash 4 era. You're welcome Kurasiu.

That pretty much was it. After that place, we went to some place on the way home, which turned out to literally give things away if they're taking too long to sell. We'll have to go back. Got a few things, managed to leave behind something (aaaa). Some groceries later, we stopped by the nearby spirits shop so I can get what I need the most.

Anyways, general thrifting and "I got a cheap crap thing that I fixed and now works better than cutting edge technology" thread.

That wizardology book seems like it might be interesting.

Dragonology was high quality. It had materials and scales and stuff. I imagine the rest in the series would have some promise, at least unless newer copies are cheapened and don't have non-standard paper material. I didn't look too close because I was trying to keep pace going around places.

There's something about that Mewtwo which feels... relaxed? They're so confident but something still seems a little off, perfect for thrifting I suppose

Didn't expect so much tech but dang, neat to see them still around too, probably pricy as hell though

Awesome finds, making me want to check out some local stores myself

It was very bootleg feeling. There's also a stab wound if you look close. That's not a part of the design or the lighting. The stuffing is exposed. Likely a reference to when Mew stabs him in the movie.
